As the tournament season gets under way, we find ourselves ready for another great year in the IIKA. Last month, to help prepare would-be competitors, Mr. True held a pre-event, pre-season workout at his dojo…just to get everyone in the right frame-of-mind.
Crossville and Oliver Springs both attended to make the night a lot of fun. Mr. Palmer, from Crossville, led the exercises and Mr. Duncan, from Oliver Springs, finished the warm-up with Chart One. Mr. True took a moment to welcome everyone and briefly explain the IIKA’s renewed focus on fundamentals and power. He also discussed the various versions of Kata (teaching, tournament and street) and how Kata needs to be a fundamental element of each class to build power and hone self defense skills. The night finished-off with the sounds of pad-on-pad, pad-on-face, pad-on-body, pad-on- everything. There was a lot of contact! Everyone was there to work hard, learn and improve. The competition was intense…yet civilized. As always, it was good to see old friends and welcome new ones. All-in-all, it was another great night with some truly fine Isshinryu folks.
